Downtown's Growth is Visible Through Various Projects - 2010-05-10
The Performance Park at 2nd and A Streets is nearing completion. On April 10th, a group of 200 community members helped lay sod in the park. The Ambassadors and various community members worked hard planting trees and bushes, laying down pavers for a stage, and inserting basalt columns and rocks to add to the overall ambiance of the park. The park will be available to be rented for outdoor occasions and events, and will also be open for downtown business people and residents to use for everyday use.
The Committee for Downtown Yakima is thankful for everyone who helped complete this project, including George Pechtel, Barb Greco, Mary Place, the county, CDY Ambassadors, and the community who donated time and resource which helped turn this park into a reality.
In addition to the Performance Park at 2nd and A Street, there are various ongoing projects that will help make downtown Yakima the premier gathering place of Central Washington. The Capitol Theatre continues to work on its expansion, which includes a black box theatre, full production center, all new dressing rooms, and a full basement, which will remodel 9500 sq feet per floor for 3 floors.
Also, the Yakima Convention Center has begun to preview the new construction that is planned for the outdoor plaza and streetscape in front of the Convention Center. The new addition will have a living room, enclosed feel for the outdoor gathering place. A slight curve will be added to the sidewalk in order to expand the area that is proposed for the outdoor and streetscape.
