Avenue Q @ the Capitol Theatre
February 17, 2010
4:00 pm
Join the Capitol Theatre for Avenue Q, the hilarious story of Princeton, a fresh-out-of-college English major with big dreams and a tiny bank account. Setting out for New York City, Princeton soon discovers the only neighborhood he can afford is the oddly populated Avenue Q. Here, he meets an endearing, oddball collection of people—including kooky Christmas Eve and hapless hubby Brian—and puppets; sloppy Nicky, closeted Rod, lovelorn Kate, porn-happy Trekkie Monster, and bimbo-licious Lucy the Slut. Together, Princeton and his eclectic mix of friends struggle to find jobs, dates, themselves, and a purpose in life. Like Sesame Street, Avenue Q is centered in a neighborhood where life is a series of problems and lessons learned. Rod and Nicky will remind you of Ernie and Bert, and clearly, Trekkie Monster was inspired from the beloved Cookie monster. But from there on out, the similarities end. Avenue Q deals with adults and adult-size issues: repressed sexuality, unemployment, racism and depression. While mature teens will enjoy the show (and think you’re totally cool for bringing them) it’s definitely not appropriate for children, or those who are uncomfortable with say, puppets having sex on stage. Opening off-Broadway in 2003, Avenue Q gained rave reviews and was extended four time before moving to Broadway July 31, 2003. The show won three Tony Awards in 2004 (beating out Wicked for Best Musical) and is still running at present. Rated R for mature content and sexual explicitness, Avenue Q will kick off the Capitol Theatre’s new “Broadway on the Edge” series.
